Interior Wood Coatings

Water-borne parquet finishes have become firmly established on the market in recent years, with UV-curing formulations having gained particular significance for interior wood coatings.

In water-borne formulations, the right choice of defoamer is extremely important, as it needs to ensure adequate long-term defoaming even though it is only possible to incorporate relatively small shear forces. This is a formidable challenge for many defoamers.

TEGO® products have also set standards in the elimination of micro-foam in water-borne coatings through the consistent development of a specialized class of additives. Good leveling and wetting properties are important for water-borne and radiation-curing formulations. Surface- and substrate-wetting additives can be targeted to improve these properties.

Silicone-based and silicone-free substrate-wetting additives have become important products for wood substrates in recent years.

Water-based coatings are generally easy to matt, although their incorporation and stabilization need special attention. Efficiency and high transparency are required. ACEMATT® 3300, ACEMATT® TS 100, and ACEMATT® OK 520 satisfy these exacting requirements. Due to its novel post-treatment, ACEMATT® 3300 shows clearly reduced adsorption of associative thickeners compared to all other matting agents. UV-based coatings are difficult to matt, but ACEMATT® 3600, a new development for 100% UV systems, meets this requirement.

VESTANAT® EP-M 95 is able to act as a crosslinker for highly scratch-resistant 2K clear wood coatings as well as a crosslinker for ambient-temperature curing of isocyanat-free clear coatings.

AEROSIL® fumed silica is mainly used to control rheological characteristics, as a thixotroping agent, or as an anti-settling agent. Several hydrophilic or hydrophobic AEROSIL® fumed silica grades are available, depending on your application needs. AEROSIL®, a structure-modified silica, acts as an additive that increases the mechanical stability of resins and thus either diminishes scratching or modifies surfaces to be more hydrophobic and/or oleophobic.

VISIOMER® IBOA and reactive methacrylates like VISIOMER® HEMA are suitable for use in UV-curing resins. Specialty methacrylates such as VISIOMER® c-HMA also provide outstanding properties in water-borne binders used on wood surfaces.

In wood paints, VESTOSINT® fine powders improve abrasion resistance and are used as a textural additive.
