The Evonik Industries portfolio comprises several functional-polymer technologies. The most prominent polymer technologies are:
1.) Silicone resins and silicone combination resins
The benefits of silicone resins can be combined with versatile organic polymers (such as epoxy, polyester, or polyurethane) to create functional polymers with outstanding performance properties. This technology is used in numerous industrial applications as binders e.g. for heavy duty anti-corrosion protection, ultra-high solid formulations or high-temperature resistant coatings (e.g. SILIKOPON®, SILIKOPUR®, SILIKOTOP®, SILIKOPHEN® and SILIKOFTAL®).
2.) Ketone formaldehyde condensates
Evonik's ketone-adehyde resins (TEGO® VariPlus) include a wide range of non-saponifiable, neutral, and hard resins with a low molecular weight and good light and heat resistance. These resins are used in numerous coatings and printing inks to enhance properties like hardness, gloss, adhesion, and color intensity.
3.) Polyester resins
Evonik offers a wide range of polyesters and co-polyesters for versatile applications:
a) TEGO® AddBond products are low-molecular polyesters with high hydroxyl and carboxy functionality. Due to their excellent compatibility with other formulation components, the TEGO® AddBond products are used as co-binders in numerous coating formulations to optimize adhesion to the substrate, hardness/flexibility, and gloss.
b) DYNACOLL® products are linear co-polyesters with primary hydroxyl functionality and medium molecular weight. The DYNACOLL® product line is designed as a building-block system, allowing the tailored production of reactive hotmelts (RHM).
c) DYNAPOL® products are high-molecular and medium-molecular co-polyesters suitable for package coating (metal can interiors and exteriors, and foil lacquers) or coil coating (top coats, back coats, or primers). The DYNAPOL® product range serves the full spectrum of pre-coated metal applications. You can choose depending on your individual profile of requirements and will achieve excellent film adhesion at an optimum balance of formability and hardness. Many grades are approved for food-contact coatings.
d) DYNAPOL® UB systems are made of saturated, hydroxylated polyester resins and blocked, cycloaliphatic polyisocyanate crosslinkers. DYNAPOL® UB systems are suitable for the manufacture of industrial coatings, particularly coil coatings with high flexibility, good surface hardness, and outstanding weatherability.
VISIOMER® methacrylate monomers allow resin producers to design functional binder resins with a broad portfolio of properties.
DEGALAN® is used as a binder in a large number of different applications, such as heat sealing, marine paints and container coatings, concrete paints, metal coatings, plastics coatings, PVC top coats, printing inks, and exterior paints.
DEGAROUTE® products are reactive resins used as binders for durable road markings. The systems' longevity makes them reliable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective, thus providing an innovative solution which enhances safety for road users around the world.
POLYVEST® and derivatives are stereo-specific, low-viscosity, unsaponifiable liquid polybutadienes with a high, 1.4-cis double-bond content. Their high reactivity results in excellent water and chemical resistance in addition to good electrical insulating properties. Common applications include adhesives/sealants, anti-corrosion primers, rubber applications, potting compounds, and impregnations.
6.) Poly-alpha olefine
Evonik's VESTOPLAST® amorphous poly-alpha olefins (APAO) offer a broad range of co- and ter-polymers of ethene, propene, and 1-butene as raw materials for various applications. Under variation of the monomer composition, molecular weight, and chemical modification, optimum values are achieved for properties like hardness, melt viscosity, crystallinity, and rate of crystallization.
7.) Organo-modified siloxanes (OMS)
The OMS technology is used in numerous applications such as urethane-based resins (among them SILIKOPUR® 8080 and various additives). Using the OMS technology, it is possible to combine the unique properties of silicones with versatile organic polymers to achieve properties like easy-to-clean and others.
The portfolio of Evonik Industries includes several key building blocks/monomers for the synthesis of different types of functional polymers. The following are the most important building block/monomer technologies:
VISIOMER® methacrylates from Evonik offer the coatings industry a versatile tool box for tailoring resin properties as desired—from hard to soft, hydrophobic to hydrophilic, with a wide range of functionalities.
VISIOMER® MMA, n-BMA and i-BMA are standard building blocks for binders that improve weatherability and color retention of the resin. VISIOMER® MMA is used for hard resins with excellent thermal stability, whereas VISIOMER® n-BMA and i-BMA provide flexibility.
Long-chain esters, such as VISIOMER® C17.4-MA, result in hydrophobicity or even wax-like properties. Methacrylates with bulky side chains, such as VISIOMER® c-HMA and IBOMA, increase the glass transition temperature of binders and simultaneously reduce resin viscosity.
2.) Isocyanates and Amines
VESTAMIN® products are aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diamines that are used in hardeners for high-performance 2K epoxy systems. Applications include industrial EP flooring, where they produce excellent leveling and aesthetic properties, along with mechanical and chemical resistance. Other applications for the VESTAMIN® family are curing agents for EP composites and chain extenders for PUR resins for use in printing ink binders for retort food packaging.
VESTAMIN® EP A 95 is a diamino alkyl sulfonate used as a building block (internal hydrophobizing agent) for PUDs with broad pH stability, making it possible to store PUDs under non-alkaline conditions.
VESTANAT® products are aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diisocyanates that are widely used as essential building blocks in synthesizing non-yellowing PUR resins such as PUDs, urethane acrylates, and TPU. The diisocyanates in the VESTANAT® family are increasingly used for non-yellowing, PUR elastomer applications.
